Comedy Central clips removed from YouTube

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

A third party is using the DMCA and has asked YouTube to remove Comedy Central clips off of its popular video sharing site. With deep pockets behind them, YouTube will probably see more and more of these from copyright holders. Does this already spell the end of YouTube as we know it?

With the XBOX 360 already out in force, the PS3 and Wii on the way, who will come out victorious? They all have their positives and negatives but I think that the price of the system will play a major role in this. What do you think?

UndoTV.com

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

In case you didn’t already know former TechTV alumni Leo Laporte and Chris Pirillo have created a new site dubbed UndoTV.com.

The community (you) will determine the direction of our efforts. Certainly, some former TechTV talent has gone on to do fantastic productions far outside the realm of the tech industry. Everybody is welcome to help us undo the idea of television – helping reinvent the way community can influence the active development of a site, its content, and its superstars.

I can’t wait until it goes live 100%. It should be quite interesting!

Scientists create cloak of invisibility?!

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

In the first experiment conducted by the United States and England, researchers were able to cloak a copper cylinder.

“We have built an artificial mirage that can hide something from would-be observers in any direction”, said cloak designer David Schurig, a research associate in Duke University’s electrical and computer engineering department.

Cloaking uses special materials which deflect radar waves, microwaves, and light. This could also pave the way for an improved version that can hide people and objects from visible light.

Ampersand preventing validation?

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

I know one of the biggest annoyances in programming in php and (x)html is trying to pass the W3C validation. To help prevent URIs formed from php functions from breaking validation, place the following code in your index.php file.

<?php
// Sets & to & so that it passes validation
ini_set('arg_separator.output''&');

?>

This will properly convert ampersands to & in the URI.

Google Inc. buys YouTube

Monday, October 9th, 2006

Internet giant Google has bought the unprofitable startup YouTube for $1.65 billion.
Just hours earlier YouTube unveiled 3 new agreements in an attempt to escape copyright copyright-infringement lawsuits.

YouTube will continue to retain its brand, as well as all 67 employees, including co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year.

“I’m confident that with this partnership we’ll have the flexibility and resources needed to pursue our goal of building the next-generation platform for serving media worldwide,” said Hurley, YouTube’s 29-year-old CEO.

YouTube strikes a deal

Monday, October 9th, 2006

In an attempt to befriend content providers, the popular video sharing site YouTube has struck a new deal with CBS, Vivendi’s Universal Music Group and Sony BMG Music Entertainment. This is one month after striking a deal with Warner Music.

CBS said it will provide short-form video content for a CBS “brand channel” on YouTube’s site starting this month, Vivendi said it will allow users to access thousands of music videos and that it will also make video content available and will also let YouTube users include some catalog songs in their own amateur video uploads.

More on this as it comes along.
