New monitor pwnage!

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Ok, so I came home from work and I went to turn on my monitor ( 19in CRT ). The only thing I got was a blinking yellow light. After various troubleshooting I came to the conclusion that my beloved monitor was dead. So off I went to the local Wal-Mart where apparently they don’t sell monitors anymore. =/

I then went to Staples where I learned that they pretty much only sell LCDs. I finally choose the Envision 19in widescreen LCD and let me tell you, it was worth every penny on the $240 I put down for it. While the resolution will take some getting used to ( my CRT was 1600×1200 and this one is 1440×900 ), the color is so sharp and clear. Plus it has the ability to use DVI connectors which I have yet to try out.

Australian Scientists Develop Air Guitar T-Shirt

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Australian scientists announced Monday that they have developed a high-tech T-shirt that turns the strumming of an air guitar into music.

Apparently the long-sleeved T-shirt has sensors built into the elbows that pick up arm movements. It then sends the signals to a computer that then interprets them as riffs. One arm picks the chords and the other one strums.

It seems like a cool advancement in technology, but I just hope they find a better place to implement it than in an air guitar shirt.

Google screws up … again.

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Google Inc. accidentally sent out e-mail containing a mass mailing worm to about 50,000 members of an e-mail discussion list focused on its Google Video Blog, the company said Tuesday.

“On Tuesday evening, three posts were made to the Google Video Blog-group that should not have been posted,” Google said in a statement, posted late Tuesday night.

Apparently some of the posts contained the W32/Kapser.A@mm mass mailing worm, better known as the “Kama Sutra” worm. They also that they are now taking steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Now, I’m just wondering how exactly one of the biggest internet related companies makes a huge mistake like that? I don’t know about you but I check my emails and posts before I send them off over the internet.

Oh, I should mention for those that don’t know, this is coming just months after their accidental deletion of their own blog and the hijacking of their own blog. Maybe they should invest in hiring better employees instead of buying video sharing sites … just my 2 cents.

Saddam Hussein sentenced to death

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

An Iraqi special tribunal today convicted Saddam Hussein of crimes against humanity for the brutal repression of a Shiite town in the 1980s and sentenced him to death by hanging.

As the verdict was read, Saddam shouted, “Long live the people! Long live the Arab nation! Down with the spies!” He then chanted “God is great” several times.

Obviously Saddam plans to appeal the decision but if he does not win his appeal in 30 days he will be executed.

New Windows XP Zune Theme

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

With the launch of the latest music service and player, Microsoft has also released a new theme for Windows XP. The theme is black and orange and is very Vista like. You can get the new theme here, but for some reason there is a problem with the installer that leaves a few parts unskinned. That can be easily rectified by going to c:windowsresourcesthemeszune and create a folder called “Shell.” In the “Shell” folder create another folder called “NormalColor.” Then place the shellstyle.dll file in the zune theme folder into the “NormalColor” folder and reapply your theme. Enjoy!

Vista to ease previous license restrictions

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

After many complaints about the current licensing terms on Windows Vista, Microsoft decided to ease it a bit.

Originally the license read:

The first user of the software may reassign the license to another device one time. If you reassign the license, that other device becomes the licensed device.

It now reads:

You may install one copy of the software on the licensed device. You may use the software on up to two processors on that device at one time. Except as provided in the Storage and Network Use (Ultimate edition) sections below, you may not use the software on any other device.

Microsoft also revised the re-installation part of the license to read:

You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices

While the license still limits how many times you can install new devices and hardware, it is a lot better than only allowing one change, but will it be enough to satisfy PC enthusiasts?
