Bernie Mac passes away

Comic legend Bernie Mac died yesterday from complications with pneumonia. He was 50.

Mac suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body’s organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

“The world just got a little less funny,” said “Oceans” co-star George Clooney.

George Carlin passes away

Comedian George Carlin, known for his edgy and provocative material, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday. He was 71.

Charlton Heston dies

Actor, Charlton Heston, has passed away at the age of 84. There will be a private memorial service.

Astronomers find mysterious radio burst

“This is something that’s completely unprecedented”

A new and intense type of radio burst has been discovered. The single, short-lived blast of radio waves likely occurred some 3 billion light-year from Earth, but scientists aren’t sure what it means yet.

“We’re confused and excited, but it could open up a whole new research field,” Lorimer told SPACE.com of the 5-millisecond blip on the cosmic radar screen. “If we really go after these things, we expect to find out that a couple hundred of them occur each day.”

Brian Adams, Crush of WWF Tag Team Demolition, Dies at 43

Professional wrestler Brian Adams, best known as Crush from the tag team Demolition, has died at the age of 43. As of right now there is no official cause of death.

Merv Griffin passes away

Merv Griffin, the US entertainer who created the game shows Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, has died aged 82. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year.

He was known for his self-titled TV series, which ran for more than 5,500 editions in 23 years. In 1964 he debuted “Jeopardy” to the masses and 11 years later “Wheel of Fortune” made its debut.

6.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Japan

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake, centered 17 kilometers below sea level, struck just off the northwestern Japanese coast Monday morning, knocking down several small buildings and resulting in at least 20 injuries, authorities reported.

The quake struck at 10:13 a.m. (0113 GMT), the Japanese Meteorological Agency reported, and caused minor shaking in Tokyo, about 240 kilometers (150 miles) south of its epicenter.

Gates no longer world’s richest man

Microsoft founder Bill Gates looks to have lost his top spot as world’s richest man to Mexican telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim. Three months ago Carlos slipped past Warren Buffet as the second richest man, and now, thanks to a surge in the shares of his America Movil group, Mr. Slim has claimed the title as world’s richest man with an estimated worth of $67.8bn, compared with the $59.2bn that Bill Gates has.
