Astronomers find mysterious radio burst

Friday, September 28th, 2007

“This is something that’s completely unprecedented”

A new and intense type of radio burst has been discovered. The single, short-lived blast of radio waves likely occurred some 3 billion light-year from Earth, but scientists aren’t sure what it means yet.

“We’re confused and excited, but it could open up a whole new research field,” Lorimer told SPACE.com of the 5-millisecond blip on the cosmic radar screen. “If we really go after these things, we expect to find out that a couple hundred of them occur each day.”

Arctic ice cap melting faster than expected

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Peter Wadhams of Cambridge University, reported that the Arctic ice cap is melting faster than anyone originally thought. Scientists previously predicted that the summer sea ice would disappear from the Arctic by 2040, but Wadhams’ measurements indicate that the thinning was already approaching 50 percent and the ice could disappear by 2020.

“What’s happening to the Earth as a whole is a catastrophe, and the disappearance of Arctic sea ice has got to be one of the first indicators of the catastrophic changes,” Wadhams told ITN’s Lawrence McGinty. “It’s something we can see. We can see it from space – the Arctic pack ice is there, it’s white, and soon it won’t be there.”

If the reports are correct than the results of the ice cap melting could be catastrophic.

Sunday Night Foldathon

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

Tonight marks the first ever Sunday Night Folathon in support of Stanford’s cancer research effort Folding@Home.

“The S.N.F event is simple. On Sunday Night (March. 25th 2007) everyone who wants to participate in the S.N.F event simply turn there PS3 on and start the folding program, could be anytime you want or when you goto bed, you may let the program run as long as you want but would be great if it could atleast last till 7am Monday morning, its all up to you since anything helps. This is to see how much help we (the playstation community) can be for this program and to show them that the feature is being widely used and maybe saving lives in the process.”

While I don’t own a PS3 I do see the massive amounts of potential this has to really make a difference.

Jesus’ burial site found – film claims

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

The cave in which Jesus Christ was buried has been found in Jerusalem, claim the makers of a new documentary film.

If it proves true, the discovery, which will be revealed at a press conference in New York Monday, could shake up the Christian world as one of the most significant archeological finds in history.

About 27 years ago,10 stone caskets were discovered in a cave in Jerusalem. Archologists were summoned, and the caskets were taken away for examination. Twenty years later the names have been deciphered as: Jesua son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Matthew, Jofa (Joseph, identified as Jesus’ brother), Judah son of Jesua (Jesus’ son – the filmmakers claim).

The film, which documents the stages of the discovery, is the result of three years labor and research. It will be broadcast on the international Discovery Channel, Britain’s Channel 4, Canada’s Vision and Israel’s Channel 8, which also took part in the film’s production.

According to the filmmakers, the film’s claim is based on close work with world-famous scientists, archeologists, statisticians, DNA specialists and antiquities experts.

Two-headed reptile unearthed

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

“My first reaction when I saw that fossil was of the ‘Oh my God!’ type,” said lead researcher Eric Buffetaut of the Center for National Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris, France. “It’s something you would not really expect to see, because the chances of such a freak being fossilized are so slim.”

Scientists create cloak of invisibility?!

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

In the first experiment conducted by the United States and England, researchers were able to cloak a copper cylinder.

“We have built an artificial mirage that can hide something from would-be observers in any direction”, said cloak designer David Schurig, a research associate in Duke University’s electrical and computer engineering department.

Cloaking uses special materials which deflect radar waves, microwaves, and light. This could also pave the way for an improved version that can hide people and objects from visible light.
