Multi touch screen to change everything

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

Perceptive Pixel is a startup founded by Jeff Han. Working all but
alone from his hardware-strewn office, Jeff Han is about to change the
face of computing. Not even the big boys are likely to catch him.
Jeff Han and Phil Davidson shows how a multi-touch computer screen will
change the way we work (and play).

I saw a video about this a few months ago, but the technology seems to have advanced so far in a short amount of time. I can only wonder where they will be 6 months to a year from now. This is going to be very interesting. Check out this video of the multi touch screen in action.

Siemens sets network speed record

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Germany’s Siemens AG has set a new speed record for electrical processing of data through a fiber-optic cable. Siemens said in a statement it had processed data using exclusively electrical means at 107 gigabits per second — roughly two full DVDs per second — and sent it over a single optical fiber channel in a 100 mile-long (161-kilometre) U.S. network, the first time outside of a laboratory.

Firefox 3 Alpha

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Mozilla hit an early milestone today by releasing its first alpha of Firefox 3.0, giving Firefox and Web application developers an early look at the next-generation browser. This release is not intended for regular users, not even those who like to play around with early versions of a product, Mozilla said.

Code named “Gran Paradiso”, the new version has been under development for a year but isn’t expected to be final until the end of 2007.

Many key features are expected for the new version like the Cairo graphics library, which aims to make Web pages look the same whether they are being printed or viewed on a Windows PC, a
Macintosh, or a small-screen device, and there are rumors that it passes the ACID 2 test.

More on this as it comes along.

New monitor pwnage!

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Ok, so I came home from work and I went to turn on my monitor ( 19in CRT ). The only thing I got was a blinking yellow light. After various troubleshooting I came to the conclusion that my beloved monitor was dead. So off I went to the local Wal-Mart where apparently they don’t sell monitors anymore. =/

I then went to Staples where I learned that they pretty much only sell LCDs. I finally choose the Envision 19in widescreen LCD and let me tell you, it was worth every penny on the $240 I put down for it. While the resolution will take some getting used to ( my CRT was 1600×1200 and this one is 1440×900 ), the color is so sharp and clear. Plus it has the ability to use DVI connectors which I have yet to try out.

Australian Scientists Develop Air Guitar T-Shirt

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Australian scientists announced Monday that they have developed a high-tech T-shirt that turns the strumming of an air guitar into music.

Apparently the long-sleeved T-shirt has sensors built into the elbows that pick up arm movements. It then sends the signals to a computer that then interprets them as riffs. One arm picks the chords and the other one strums.

It seems like a cool advancement in technology, but I just hope they find a better place to implement it than in an air guitar shirt.
